State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyin on Wednesday urged people to cooperate in the pursuit of national interests and to stop petty leadership squabbles.

“Many  want to be leaders only- leaders of youth, leaders of women, leaders of ethnic groups, leaders of politics and leaders in the economy. If all are leaders, who are followers?” she said at the seminar on the development of universities held in Nay Pyi Taw.

The most important is we all need to cooperate and work as a group,” she emphasised.

The seminar aims to encourage universities, student unions and teachers unions to develop coordinated approaches to seek the development of universities, said Union Minister of Education U Myo Thein Gyi.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said the people must not always seek to be “in front of the others.”

“I want you all to fix your own weaknesses and use your strengths for others, through cooperation,” she said.

The State Counsellor also underscored the need to develop the skills and abilities of the youth “so that the country can keep up with development of the modern world”.

A quality assurance system will have to be adopted for the sustainable development of national education. The system will help enhance the quality of teaching, and thus of education,” she said.

U Myo Thein Gyi said Myanmar universities produced 566 research papers in 2018, a greater number than Cambodia, Brunei and the Philippines.

But he lamented that despite the fact that the number of students has increased to over one million in 2019, the number of teachers is not increasing.

U Myo Thein Gyi said there are only some 20,000 teachers in higher education in Myanmar and a study is currently being undertaken to find ways to attract more teachers.
