Andrew Yang is just as freaked out about creepy robots poised taking over the world as anybody.
“We should lead the world in a global ban on lethal autonomous weapons systems. Only humans should be making life or death decisions,” the Democratic presidential hopeful warned in a tweet about artificial intelligence on Thursday.
Yang linked the tweet to a 2017 Future of Life Institute video titled “Slaughterbots,” which “offers a cautionary and dystopian vision of the future,” according to VentureBeat, and portrays killer drones that are operated by AI.
It’s not so far fetched — according to VentureBeat — that “Russian company Kalashnikov is developing a kamikaze drone, and though it was most likely piloted by a human, the world saw one of the first targeted political assassination attempts with a drone in history in 2018 in Venezuela.
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is developing ways for swarms of drones to take part in military missions, and the US Department of Defense developed hardware to guard against weaponized drone attacks.”
Yang has been the most vocal Democratic candidate about AI — and while he lags in the race, he has at least one major celebrity supporter: Last week Dave Chappelle endorsed Yang and will join him on the campaign trail in Iowa and South Carolina.
