INDIANAPOLIS – As part of the continued overhaul of the entire football operation he started two years ago, general manager Dave Gettleman has fired two longtime Giants area scouts, The Post confirmed.
Gettlemen let go of Ryan Jones, who was with the Giants for 20 years, and Donnie Etheridge, who was with the team for the past 19 years.
Jones worked the northeast region and Etheridge worked with the southwest region, assignments given to them in 2018 when Gettleman took over.
This is an ongoing revamp by Gettleman, who changed the way the Giants rank players on their draft board, altered the way the scouts send in reports, promoted Chris Pettit to director of college scouting and hired specific personnel to help the organization upgrade its analytics department.
The Giants have the No. 4 pick in this year’s NFL Draft. Gettleman and the entire Giants’ football front office is at the NFL scouting combine this week.
New head coach Joe Judge was thought to have completed his first Giants coaching staff but he has added another assistant. Judge, again reaching into his past, has hired Amos Jones.
Jones, 60, was the special teams coordinator and linebackers coach at Mississippi State in 2004 when Judge played there and when Judge was a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater from 2005-07. Jones has been referred to as one of Judge’s mentors.
Jones has extensive experience guiding special teams. He is expected to work closely with Judge as a sounding board, perhaps also serving as a game-day manager for the 38-year-old novice head coach.
Jones has worked for the Steelers, Cardinals and Browns, and last season was the Buccaneers’ assistant special teams coordinator.
The Giants on Monday cut two tight ends, Scott Simonson and Isaiah Searight. These were procedural moves, as both players were on injured reserve and passed their physicals a day earlier. Simonson was with the Giants the past two seasons, playing in 21 games and catching 11 passes for 97 yards and one touchdown. Searight did not play any games for the Giants and last season was suspended four games for violating the NFL’s policy on performance enhancing drugs.
