"Doctor Who." BBC Studios 2018
New Year’s Day is a time to make resolutions — and to pay the consequences of partying the night before by spending the day watching TV on your couch.

Luckily there’s no shortage of quality programming this year. Here’s what to look for on Wednesday’s TV schedule.

“Messiah” (Netflix)

If you’re in the mood to start 2020 off with a miracle, this might be the show for you. The 10-episode thriller focuses on the world’s reaction to a mysterious man named Al-Massih (Mehdi Dehbi, “Mary, Queen of Scots”) who claims to be the return of Jesus. His appearance sparks a cult following and a CIA investigation, led by case officer Eva Gellar (Michelle Monaghan, “True Detective”).

The Season 12 premiere will be the second season to feature Jodie Whittaker as the titular character. She’ll continue her adventures with companions Ryan (Tosin Cole), Yasmin (Mandip Gill) and Graham (Bradley Walsh). 8 p.m.

“Flirty Dancing” (Fox)

The latest UK reality show to get a US version, Fox’s new show hosted by Jenna Dewan puts together singles who see how much chemistry they have while performing a dance together. The catch? They’re not allowed to speak; they must determine if they want to see each other again based only on the dance. It sounds dubious, but if “The Masked Singer” could catch on, anything is possible. 8 p.m.

“Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice” (CNN)

This documentary film, directed by Oscar winners Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (“End Game”), follows the life of singer Linda Ronstadt, best known for ‘70s songs such as “You’re No Good” and “When Will I Be Loved.” If you missed it during its brief theater run this fall, catch it on CNN. 9 p.m.

“Party of Five” (Hulu)

Although this new series won’t premiere on its linear network, Freeform, until Jan. 8 (9 p.m.), the first episode will be available on Hulu as a sneak peek. The original incarnation of the show, which ran on Fox from 1994 to 2000, followed the Salinger family of five siblings who must fend for themselves after their parents die, led by oldest sibling Charlie (a pre- “Lost” Matthew Fox). The reboot has changed the family to the Acostas, and their parents are not dead but deported back to Mexico. The five siblings’ personalities remain the same though, down to the reluctant oldest son becoming guardian (with a name change from Charlie to Emilio, played by Brandon Larracuente, “13 Reasons Why”).

“Impossible Engineering” (Science Channel)
This show examines engineering marvels around the world. The seventh-season premiere focuses on Dubai, where the high demand for beachfront real estate forces developers to create a man-made island. 9 pm.

Want to spend the day revisiting a classic heartwarming family comedy? This 2006 Oscar winner follows a dysfunctional family (Greg Kinnear, Toni Collette, Alan Arkin, Paul Dano and Steve Carell) as they embark on a disaster-filled road trip to their youngest daughter Olive’s (Abigail Breslin) beauty pageant.

Almost all the “Star Trek” movies (Amazon)
If you’re disillusioned with the critically panned latest “Star Wars” movie, why not spend the day on a “Star Trek” Marathon? Amazon has a slew of the films, including “Star Trek: The Motion Picture,” “Star Trek: Insurrection,” “Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country,” “Star Trek V: The Final Frontier,” “Star Trek II: The Search for Spock” and “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.”

This goofy new show, co-starring January Jones (“Mad Men”), is a throwback to ’90s films such as “The Cutting Edge.” Here, high-level skater Kat Baker (Kaya Schodelario, “Skins”) fights for a chance at victory on the ice.
