The opening ceremony of the 48th Myanmar Health Research Congress was held at the Medical Research Department in Yangon yesterday morning.

Union Minister for Health and Sports Dr Myint Htwe first delivered a speech. He said this annual congress brings together researchers, medical experts and managers so that they may exchange experiences and knowledge.

He said research results and findings are important for the development of policies, management, implementation and work sector. He said the findings and recommendations from research conducted by his ministry need to be reassessed in practical usage situations.

He said research results and findings need to be genuinely used for the objective of conducting research to be successful. He said his ministry has acquired K1 billion in permitted funds in 2017-2018 FY for research matters, K500 million from April to September 2018, and K1.5 billion in 2018-2019 FY.

The Union Minister said they have used these funds for improving administration of health action plans, professional expertise, and management of medicine and medical equipment. He said they have conduced 955 research projects and will permit an additional K3 billion in 2019-2020 FY.

The Union Minister said they have implemented a health research registration system and will implement research on important sectors that require it. He said new generations of professionals need to have their research skills upgraded.

He said they will form a research titled bank in the future and design research guidelines and protocol that are coherent with the nation. He said this congress will read 107 research posters and 34 papers.

Next, the Union Minister observed the research posters and exhibition booths and then joined the research paper presentation as Chair.
The congress will be held under the title ‘Antimicrobial resistance: a threat of global concern’ until 17 January and include research papers from Japan, Norway, South Korea, Singapore, Britain, Australia, China, Thailand, Indonesia and Myanmar.

Later in the afternoon, the Union Minister met with the rector, professors and teachers, the department heads, professors, assistant professors and teachers of the protection and social affairs medicine department of five Universities of Medicine, teachers of University of Basic Health, and members of protection and social affairs medicine group at the University of Public Health.

The Union Minister told them to share global health information with their students, to make all-round improvements and will organize a seminar on relevant topics in the future.
