Netflix has confirmed: “The Walking Dead” actress Christian Serratos will play iconic singer Selena Quintanilla in the streaming giant’s upcoming take on her rise to fame.
In a teaser for the drama series, Selena applies lipstick, dances in her living room as her mother looks on, then performs in her famous sparkly purple bodysuit. The series will consist of six one-hour episodes, and premieres in 2020.
The tweet introducing Serratos as Selena has already racked up more than 13,000 likes since being posted this morning. But some fans are not enthused.
“Why do we need a series?” questions one critic. “The movie is enough, plus we already know how it’s gonna end,” referring to the 1997 film starring Jennifer Lopez as the Tejano music star, who was shot and killed in 1995 at age 23.
“Ima watch it but nobody can top JLO performance as Selena,” writes another.
Others welcomed the new series with open arms: “If we don’t continue creating content around her the newer generation wouldn’t know who she is,” a fan tweeted.
In addition to her work on “The Walking Dead,” Serratos, 29, played the role of Angela Weber in the “Twilight” franchise.
The beloved Latin American singer has continued to make headlines decades since her murder. In 2017, she was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The ceremony drew record crowds. Earlier this year, Forever 21 released a capsule collection inspired by the late legend.
