UNION Minister for Information Dr Pe Myint held a meeting with the officers of the Information and Public Relations Department (IPRD) from the State/Regional and district levels at his ministry in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday morning.
Firstly, the Union Minister delivered a speech where he said that ever since he joined the Ministry of Information, he had urged staff of the IPRD to become responsible and accountable. He also said to make the IPRD an indispensable department for the nation and its staff to be indispensable for the department.
He said the IPRD has to provide services directly to the public and thus needs to work hard to be acknowledged and accepted by everyone. He said this is why they need to be staff that can provide services to the public in line with changing times.
The Union Minister said the IPRD leads the organizing of the Children Literary Festivals and because of the growing interest of the festival being relevant to all spheres of society, there have been similar festivals held in each region and public participation has enabled the festival to be held at the township level as well.
He said, similarly, they had worked hard to convert the public libraries into community centres, transforming them from merely a place to gather knowledge to a community-based site. He said they must further represent the public and implement their will and he sees that among these endeavours are the holding of public reading circles and literature talks.
The Union Minister said the IPRD has been formed from the state/regional level to the district and township level, and its staff carry the responsibility to disseminate news and information to the public, an objective of the ministry, and to gather news and information as well. He said they must work hard to rise from simple news gatherers to outstanding media professionals.
The Union Minister said online media is proliferate in this age and thus, the IPRD staff have varied opportunities to become excellent media professionals by presenting news and information relevant to their township to the public.
He said that by continuing to uphold these responsibilities, staff will become essential to their region and department, and the IPRD will likewise become crucial for the nation.
Next, IPRD Director-General U Ye Naing explained the IPRD’s processes in 2019 and the State/ Regional department heads explained the advantages and disadvantages they faced in implementing their work in 2019 and their future plans.
Deputy Minister U Aung Hla Tun responded to them, after which the Union Minister delivered the closing speech.
