Walt Disney Studios has issued a warning that “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” could trigger seizures in photosensitive people with epilepsy.
The company is working with the Epilepsy Foundation to promote the alert, Variety reports, as well as to give tips on how fans can still enjoy the movie, which contains “several sequences with imagery and sustained flashing lights.”
“Out of an abundance of caution, we recommend that you provide at your venue box office and online, and at other appropriate places where your customers will see it, a notice containing the following information: ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ contains several sequences with imagery and sustained flashing lights that may affect those who are susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy or have other photosensitivities,” Disney writes in the letter.
Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological diseases and affects about 50 million people worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. Epileptic seizures can be triggered by stimuli from flashing bright lights like strobes or flickering computer monitors to fire alarms and emergency vehicles.
Disney suggests that theaters post signs to warn theatergoers of the risk before seeing the conclusion to the Skywalker saga.
Fans with epilepsy don’t need to miss out on “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” though. The Epilepsy Foundation recommends having a friend or family member watch the movie first, then inform which scenes could trigger a seizure. The foundation also recommends bringing a pal along to see the movie to keep safe.
